Reading’s Welsh international defender Chris Gunter has penned a new two-year deal with the Berkshire club, the club have confirmed.
The 26-year-old was due to be out of contract in the summer, and has recently attracted the interest of a number of Premier League sides, with Norwich City and Steve McClaren’s Newcastle United among the handful of clubs reportedly vying for his services.
However, the new deal sees Gunter stay at the Madejski Stadium for at least another two seasons.
The full-back, who is comfortable playing on either side of the defence, moved to the Royals in the summer of 2012, and has established himself as a key member of the side – making well over 100 appearances.
He is also a seasoned player at international level, having made 64 appearances for Wales since 2007, and played a key role in their historic qualification for the upcoming European Championships in France.
Reading’s season has been on a downhill slope as of late, with the club in 15th place in the Championship table, after previously finding themselves in and around the promotion spots after an impressive start to the season.
