Reading FC have completed the loan signing of Espanyol midfielder Alex Fernandez, with the option of making the deal permanent should he impress, according to HITC.

The 22-year old came through the youth ranks at Real Madrid and played 99 times for the club’s B team as well as coming on for the final few minutes in a game against Racing Santander in 2011.

He joined Espanyol in 2013 and played 30 times for them in his first season, although only five of those were starts.

Fernandez joined Croatian side HNK Rijeka in January on loan, scoring two goals in nine appearances, and he has not been able to force himself into the plans of Espanyol manager Sergio Gonzalez and has been allowed to join Steve Clarke’s side as a result.

According to Spanish newspaper¬†AS, the fee to make the midfielder’s deal permanent is ¬£1.3m, which can be activated at any point. However, Espanyol president Joan Collet also explained that Real Madrid have the option to re-sign Fernandez, a clause that is common among Castilla graduates.

The Spaniard now adds some much needed depth in the centre of midfield for the Royals, in a season where they will be hoping for a top half finish.

The Berkshire club endured an abysmal Sky Bet Championship campaign last season, so will be hoping for a much better 2015/16 season with more consistency.
