Queens Park Rangers have confirmed via their official Twitter feed that defender Steven Caulker has left the club by mutual consent with immediate effect.

The 26-year-old joined the R’s in 2014 from Cardiff City for an undisclosed fee, and was part of the side that suffered relegation from the top flight in 2015.

A one-time England international, Caulker has battled injuries and personal issues during his time at Loftus Road, and headed out on-loan twice to Premier League sides.

Spells with Southampton and Liverpool failed to yield results, and Caulker returned to the Championship with Ian Holloway’s side.

A huge drain on the club’s wage bill due to the lengthy contract awarded to the player during their cash-rich era in the Premier League, Holloway will be glad to have the defender off the books, and can now utilise his resources in a more efficient manner.

Caulker is now a free agent, and is expected to sign with a new club in the new year.

The Verdict

This episode has finally come to an end.

Caulker was on astronomical wages at QPR, money the club simply could not afford.

Now Caulker is gone Holloway’s flexibility on wages has increased dramatically, and the former Blackpool boss will now have more room to maneuver in the winter transfer market.

Caulker remains a fantastic player who could certainly make a difference in the Premier League once again, and will find himself inundated with offers over the course of the January window.

Although a sad end to their partnership, this is certainly the right move for all involved.
