Preston have signed Sheffield Wednesday full-back Marnick Vermijl on a season-long loan deal, the Championship club have confirmed.

The 23-year old started his professional career at Manchester United after spending time in the youth setup at Standard Liege. However, he failed to establish himself at Old Trafford and signed for Wednesday in the winter transfer window after making just two League Cup appearances in his three-year stay.

He made 11 appearances under Stuart Gray last season but has obviously been deemed surplus to requirements under new manager Carlos Carvalhal.

The defender has been given the number 2 shirt for the season which suggests that manager Simon Grayson sees him as a regular right-back in the team.

Vermijl has represented Belgium at all levels up to the under-21s and was highly-rated as a youngster – Preston fans will be hoping that he can show some of that promise as their clubs looks to avoid dropping back down into League One.

The Belgian will be available for this weekend’s season opener at home against Middlesbrough.
