Sheffield Wednesday have swooped to complete the capture of Frederico Venancio.

Frederico Venancio joins the Owls on a season long loan deal, the club's official website has confirmed.

Sheffield Wednesday will have the services of Vitoria de Setubal defender Venancio until the end of the 2017/18 season.

The former Portugal under-21 international has played 134 senior games for Vitoria Setubal in total and has attracted plenty of interest.

Sheffield Wednesday have beaten off competition from a number of European clubs, including some other Championship sides, to complete the loan signing of Frederico Venancio.

For the past three seasons, the 24-year-old has been the captain of the Vitoria Setubal, who play in the Primeira Liga (the top division of Portuguese football).

Earlier in the summer, the 6ft 1in centre back was part of the Vitoria Setubal side that played Sheffield Wednesday in a pre-season friendly - the game ended 0-0 in the Algarve.

Venancio was a part of the Portugal under-21 squad which made the final of the under-21 European Championships in Prague in 2015.

However, he was an unused squad member for that tournament, where Portugal lost on penalties to Sweden in the final.

Sheffield Wednesday have now completed the signing of Frederico Venancio to bolster their defensive options.

The Verdict

Signing players from overseas - with no experience of the English leagues - is often better value for money but you run more of a risk that the player will not accustom to Championship football.

However, signing Venancio on a loan deal is low risk: if he is a flop, he can be sent back to Portugal.

Sheffield Wednesday have been searching for a new centre back for ages to provide competition for Tom Lees and Glenn Loovens so perhaps the 24-year-old could be the solution.
