Polish striker Deniss Rakels has joined Lech Poznan on loan from Championship side Reading for the 2017/18 season subject to a medical, reports the Polish side’s official website.
The 24-year-old moved to the Madejski Stadium back in January 2016 after two years at Polish outfit Cracovia, and went on to net three times in 14 games for the Royals to help Brian McDermott’s side to 17th in the Championship, and indeed the quarter-finals of the FA Cup.
However, after just three appearances under new boss Jaap Stam at the start of the 2016/17 campaign, Rakels suffered a nasty ankle injury in their EFL Cup win over MK Dons, and didn’t feature again for the Royals in their run to the Championship play-off final.
And it’s unlikely he’ll add to his 17 Reading appearances as the striker has joined Lech Poznan on a season-long loan deal, with a view to a permanent move in 12 months’ time.
The Polish side finished third in the Ekstraklasa last term, just two points adrift of champions Legia Warsaw, and will have the chance to qualify for the Europa League when they partake in the first qualifying round in July.
And for Rakels the opportunity is there for him to rebuild his career after a frustrating campaign at the Madejski Stadium, which was ultimately ruined by injury, and with his current contract at Reading up next summer, it seems highly unlikely that he’ll feature for the Royals again.
