Peterborough United have completed the signing of George Cooper from Crewe Alexandra, the club’s official website has confirmed.
George Cooper signs for an undisclosed fee from the League Two side and puts pen to paper on a three and a half year deal, committing his future to Peterborough United until the summer of 2021.
The 21-year-old has notched twelve assists this season and is only second to Maddison in the assist charts in England.
However, there are fears among the Posh fan base that this signing could mean that Marcus Maddison is on his way out of the club.
Maddison is top of the assist charts in England’s top four divisions and Posh owner Darragh MacAnthony tweeted cryptically to ask his followers “what do you do when you have the biggest assist maker in the top 4 tiers & a potentially big hole left if/when bigger club take him?”.
The tweet proved to be the pre-amble for Cooper’s unveiling but there are still concerns that the owner has hinted that Maddison’s departure could be a matter of “if” or “when” amid widespread links with a move to the Championship – including Leeds.
This was preceded by a tweeted saying he had some transfer news, accompanied by a crying emoji.
Considering Premier League clubs have been linked with Cooper, this is a real coup for Peterborough. If Maddison does end up going, at least they have someone to replace him and provide service for Jack Marriott and Danny Lloyd. At Cooper’s age as well, he is only going to get better.
