Done Deal: Oxford United enhance promotion credentials with new midfield recruit

Published

on

Barnsley have announced that midfielder Alex Mowatt will spend the rest of the 2017/18 campaign out on loan with League One Oxford United.

The Tykes broke the news of the departure on their official website in the last hour and it may come as a surprise to some supporters given that the midfielder only signed for the club back in January.

The 22-year-old is a product of the Leeds United youth academy and when he signed for the Tykes during the winter transfer window it was expected that he would be a big hit at Oakwell.

The move hasn’t quite gone according to plan however and he will now bolster an Oxford squad that will undoubtedly be looking to secure a place in the Championship with promotion from the third tier.

Pep Clotet’s side are in seventh place after four games and their signings this summer indicate that they could go well during the current campaign.

The Verdict

A midfield of Jack Payne and Alex Mowatt would probably be a hit at some Championship clubs so the fact that they are now both strutting their stuff in League One can only be positive for Oxford.

If Mowatt can help the club into the Championship then there could be the chance of a permanent deal for next season.

The Yorkshire-born player has a quality array of passing and his eye for goal could make him a solid loan signing for a League One club.
