Nottingham Forest have bolstered their midfield ranks by securing the loan signing of Newcastle United midfielder Jack Colback, the Reds have confirmed on their official website.

Forest boss Aitor Karanka has moved to sign the tough tackling midfielder from the Magpies as he looks to raise morale following last night's 3-0 drubbing at the hands of Preston North End at the City Ground.

After playing a starring role in Newcastle's promotion winning team last season, the 28-year-old has found himself pushed out of the reckoning during the club's first season back in the Premier League and moves to Forest in search of regular first-team football.

Forest boss Karanka had spoken of his desire to make his squad better and Colback becomes the Spaniard's second signing after Tobias Figueiredo joined the club on loan yesterday evening.

Forest currently sit just nine points above the relegation zone in the Championship and the signing of this proven second tier performer can only be a good thing for the club.

The Verdict

Colback is a shrewd piece of business by Nottingham Forest and his experience could be crucial for the club during their final 17 games of the campaign.

The 28-year-old played a vital part in Newcastle's team last season as Rafa Benitez's men won the Championship title and he will look to use all of his second tier know-how to steer Forest closer to the top half of the league.

This signing does look as though it might extinguish any hopes Forest had of signing Middlesbrough man Adam Clayton during this transfer window and that now looks a more realistic option in the summer.
