The young defender has been on trial with the Cobblers during pre-season, and he has impressed Wilder after playing a part in all of the club's friendlies.

The Cobblers endured a mixed season last term, and ended up finishing in 12th position after failing to maintain a decent level of consistency throughout their campaign.

Wilder will be attempting rejuvenate the Northampton Town team this season, and he has not been hanging around, having already added seven new faces to the Sky Bet League Two side.

The Cobblers will be hoping for a promotion push next season, and the addition of McDonald will undoubtedly bolster their backline ahead of the 2015/16 League Two season.

“Rod has been outstanding and has done everything we have asked of him," said Wilder to the Northampton Chronicle.

“He has come into the club and we have had a good look at him and we have had a look at him against different opposition.

“Against the opposition earlier in the pre-seasaon it was not so much about defending, more about possession and he was comfortable on the ball."

Wilder admitted that the 23 year old isn't the finished player, but is looking forward to working with him.

“There is still a little bit of work to be done with him, but he is another one where we need to get the balance right between senior players and ones we want to bring though.

“We think Road has potential to definitely add to us, and to make us better and I am sure he will do that.

“He is not ready-made, but I am confident that if I did need to stick him in the first team he could go and play and develop and progress.

“He does need a bit of work, we need to get him up to speed as he has been in non-League football for a little while, but we definitely feel he is one that can go again, and we can play a part in that.”

McDonald, who started his career at Stoke City, made 22 appearances for Telford last season, scoring twice.

He is also the son of the former Walsall player, Rod McDonald, and brother of former Notts County defender, Clayton.

And despite his lack of Football League experience, the 6ft 2 defender could well establish himself during his time at Sixfields.
