Done Deal: Northampton bring in former Oxford midfielder

Northampton Town have signed former Oxford United midfielder Danny Rose on a free transfer, the club have announced on their official website.

The 27-year-old left the Cobblers’ promotion rivals by mutual consent earlier on deadline day, and the League Two leaders have moved quickly to secure the services of the midfielder until the end of the season.

Former Manchester United academy prospect Rose played nearly 150 games across three spells for Oxford, and Northampton manager Chris Wilder admitted that he was thrilled to get the chance to bring the midfielder to Sixfields.

Wilder told the club’s website: “Even though Danny is a player I know well, he wasn’t really on our radar when we started the transfer window as we never thought Oxford would allow him to come to us.
“When he came to a agreement with Oxford to become a free agent it opened the door for us. He is a very good player who has been involved in promotion winning sides so he knows what it takes and we know he will fit in well here.
“He also knows what we are about and what we are doing now at Northampton Town, so once the move became a possibility Danny was keen to come. I am pleasantly surprised we have been able to add him.”
In between his spells with Oxford, Rose also had a successful stint at then-Conference South side Newport County, before helping Fleetwood Town win a first-ever promotion to the Football League.

Northampton currently sit top of League Two, 11 points clear of the highest play-off spot.
