Newcastle United have completed the signing of Ipswich Town striker Daryl Murphy for an undisclosed fee, the club have confirmed on their official website.

The 33-year-old has signed a two-year deal at St James’ Park and he will add some experience and Championship knowhow to Newcastle’s front line.

Ipswich manager Mick McCarthy confirmed after his side’s 1-0 win over Preston on Saturday that Murphy had handed in a transfer request at Portman Road and he was en route to Tyneside.

Although both clubs have chosen to keep the fee undisclosed, the Daily Mail claimed early on Sunday morning that the fee for the Republic of Ireland international was around £3.5m.

Murphy has started the season in relatively solid form and although he hasn’t yet found the back of the net in his 4 games this season, he has claimed 2 assists for the Tractor Boys.

The forward has played 259 games in the Championship for Ipswich and Newcastle’s arch-rivals Sunderland, scoring 77 times and claiming 42 assists in the process.

Murphy also has some experience in the Premier League from his days at the Stadium of Light, playing nearly 80 times in the top flight.
