Middlesbrough defender Hayden Coulson has joined St Mirren on loan, the club's official website has confirmed.

Coulson will spend the whole of the 2018/19 season on loan at St Mirren, who were recently promoted back to the Scottish Premiership.

The England youth international has been a regular in Middlesbrough's academy sides of the past few years, playing 18 of the 22 under-23 games last season.

The left-winger, who can also play as a left-back, has only tasted senior football in the Checkatrade Trophy for Middlesbrough's under-23 side and he will now move to Scotland for a loan stint.

The 20-year-old joins Alan Stubbs, who is the new manager of St Mirren, and will get experience against the likes of Rangers, Celtic and Aberdeen next year, with the hope that the experience can bolster his first-team opportunities.

The Verdict

This is a good move for Coulson, because he will get regular playing time in a competitive league.

In the next stage of his development, it was important that he got a taste of senior football and this will be a good test of his character and ability to step up to another level.

There is a bright future ahead of him if he can prove himself during this loan spell.
