Middlesbrough have confirmed the signing of Nottingham Forest’s Britt Assombalonga, in a deal worth £15m.

Garry Monk, who is just months into his tenure at the Riverside Stadium, had identified Assombalonga as his main striking target heading into the summer.

The 24-year-old has now arrived in the North East after Boro beat off competition from Watford and Burnley - who had an £8m bid rejected – to sign the in-demand striker.

Assombalonga’s form for Forest over the last three seasons had seen him become a wanted man this summer.

Following his arrival at The City Ground in 2014, Assombalonga went on to score 30 goals from just 65 Sky Bet Championship appearances, including 15 during the 2014/15 campaign.

A difficult 2015/16 campaign saw Assombalonga sidelined through injury and make just four appearances for Forest, but the striker was back to his best last season, scoring 14 goals.

Those 14 goals were vital for Forest, who finished just outside the Championship’s relegation zone and avoided a return to League One by the narrowest of margins.

By ending his three-year association with Forest, Assombalonga became Middlesbrough’s fifth signing of the summer, after the permanent arrivals of Jonny Howson, Cyrus Christie and Martin Braithwaite, as well as the season-long loan of Connor Roberts.
