Premier League side Liverpool have completed the signing of Charlton Athletic defender Joe Gomez, the club have confirmed.
The 18-year-old was superb for the Addicks last season, demonstrating fantastic defending ability and maturity beyond his years. He had attracted the interests of Premier League sides such as Arsenal and Manchester United in recent times.
But it is Liverpool who have managed to capture the centre back on a reported £3.5 million deal from Charlton, nailing him down to what the club describe as a ‘long term contract.’
He becomes Brendan Rodgers’ fourth signing of the close season following the signings of Burnley’s Danny Ings, Bolton goalkeeper Adam Bogdan and England international James Milner from rivals Manchester City.
His £3.5 million price tag is also the first transfer fee spent by the club this year. His first team appearances will undoubtedly be limited this year, sparking interest from Derby County in a loan move.
