Done Deal: Leeds United sell 21-year-old starlet to Yorkshire rivals

Barnsley have completed the signing of Alex Mowatt from Championship rivals Leeds United, reports the official Barnsley website.

The midfielder, who was a product of the Leeds academy, joins the Tykes on a two-and-a-half year contract.

Mowatt has been limited to just seven starts across all competitions this season, and with his contract running out in the summer Leeds have opted to sell the 21-year old this month rather than him leave for free in the summer.

The sale of Barnsley captain Conor Hourihane to Aston Villa has seen the South Yorkshire club look for replacements in midfield.

Matty James also joined the club earlier this week.

The deal sees Mowatt end a 15-year spell at Elland Road.

He made his debut in the 2013/14 season and went on to make over 100 appearances for his boyhood club, scoring 13 goals in that time.

The deal went through too late for Mowatt to feature in tomorrow’s Yorkshire Derby with Rotherham United, but the midfielder is expected to feature in Tuesday’s clash with Wolverhampton.

Leeds’ official Twitter account gave praise to their departing player for his effort and wished him all the best for the future.
