Leeds United have secured the career of another young star today, giving Kalvin Phillips an extended two- year contract, the club have confirmed.
The news comes as Leeds look to keep their current crop of academy stars where they belong, becoming the sixth youth product to officially agree a new contract.
Other youth products that have extended their contracts are Alex Purver, Tyler Denton, Jake Skelton, Luke Parkin and fellow wonderkid Lewis Cook who has been a regular star for the first team this season.
Phillips also had the opportunity to break into the first team like teammate Cook, getting his first start in a televised away game at Wolves, performing excellently through the game and even having a hand in Leeds United’s first goal. The youngster then went on to star in his home debut the week after against Cardiff, where he scored his first senior goal for the club.
The 19-year old has had a very successful season, featuring heavily for Leeds United’s development squad. Phillips made 23 appearances for the Development squad, netting 6 goals in the process. His goals including a brace at Huddersfield, with one a contender for goal of the century.
Phillips is another fantastic talent to come from the Leeds United academy. His interpretation of the game and dictation of play make his a fantastic young midfielder. His pace and awareness mean he can get out of a tight spot and his ability to pick up a goal or two could be a real benefit to Leeds next season.
With Leeds seeing the benefit of picking academy players like Mowatt and Cook and watching them flourish this season, Phillips could well be the next to be given a full season in front of the fans at Elland Road.
Leeds fans, would you rather youth got given more of a chance over signings? Have your say at FLW.
