Sunderland have confirmed on the club's official website that Lewis Grabban has departed and headed back to parent club Bournemouth.

Grabban signed a season long loan deal with Sunderland in the summer but has told the club that he no longer wishes to play for them.

As a result, Sunderland have come to a mutual agreement with Bournemouth to allow Grabban to return to the south coast.

The 29-year-old was Sunderland's top scorer and ranked among the top scorers in the Championship too with his tally of 12 goals in 20 games.

But Sunderland will now need to start looking at alternative options up front after the former Norwich City forward decided he wants to return to Bournemouth.

Grabban has not played for Sunderland since the 23rd December, when he scored a goal in the draw with Birmingham City.

On Grabban's departure, Sunderland manager Chris Coleman said: “Throughout my time at the football club I have continually reiterated that I only wish to work with players who want to be here and work hard for Sunderland.

“Lewis informed us of his desire to leave and we wish him well.”

The Verdict

This is a blow for Sunderland because Grabban's goals were the shining light in a dismal season so far.

The Black Cats are rock bottom of the Championship and need some inspiration to lift them to safety.

But things are looking more promising under Chris Coleman, the likes of Joel Asoro and Josh Maja are showing promise and some funds will now be freed up to bring in another attacker.
