Done Deal: Ipswich Town secure signing of 29-year-old striker

Sky Bet Championship side Ipswich Town have today announced on their official website the signing of forward Leon Best.

The 29-year-old has signed a one-year deal at Portman Road after impressing manager Mick McCarthy during a short stint training at the club.

The striker knows the Championship particularly well, having had spells on loan at Sheffield Wednesday, Derby County, and Brighton & Hove Albion in the last few years, and did his bit to help Rotherham United stay in the division last season, netting four goals in 16 games for the Millers.

Unsurprisingly, Tractor Boys boss McCarthy is happy to get the deal completed.

He told the official website: ‘Leon did well last week. I was impressed.

‘He knows this league. He’s got that physical presence and he will add to the options we have got up front.

‘We are delighted to have him here.’

Best, who has been capped seven times at senior level for the Republic of Ireland, netted for Ipswich’s Under-23 team in their 3-2 defeat at home to Birmingham City last week, and will add some experience to McCarthy’s squad, having played over 250 times in his career.

He made his senior debut 12 years ago at Southampton and, after three years which included numerous loan spells at lower league clubs, he moved to Coventry City.

Best had his most prolific spell of his career at the Ricoh Arena, netting 23 times in 105 appearances, which earned him a move to Newcastle United in 2010.

Two years and 46 appearances later, the forward made a big money move to Blackburn Rovers, where he stayed until November of last year.
