League One side Gillingham have announced the signing of former Newport County captain Mark Byrne.
Byrne will join up with the Gills manager Justin Edinburgh for the third time in his career, having also played for the former Tottenham defender at Rushden and Diamonds during a loan spell from his old club Nottingham Forest.
The 27-year-old midfielder earned a reputation for being a leader on the pitch, with the Exiles having been signed by Edinburgh on a free transfer after having been released from Barnet at the end of the 2013/14 season.
The Irishman made 88 appearances for County during his time with the club and scored 6 goals in what was an impressive spell with the League Two club.
Byrne said to the club site: “I’m delighted to sign, I’m happy to be here and looking forward to getting started.”
“I’ve worked under Justin before, and when I found out there was interest from him and the club, I was more than happy to work with him again.”
