Olympique Marseille have confirmed the arrival of Jordan Amavi from Aston Villa on the club’s official Twitter account.

The 23-year-old came close to leaving Villa earlier this summer, but his proposed move to Sevilla fell through, due to the Spanish club claiming the player had failed his medical.

However, Amavi will now link up with the Ligue 1 club for the 2017/18 campaign, ending his two-year association with Aston Villa.

The defender arrived at Villa Park from Nice ahead of the 2015/16 campaign, but the left-back failed to make a lasting impression in England, struggling with injuries and failing to find his best form.

His first season with the club was hampered by injuries, and he was unable to prevent Villa from suffering relegation from the Premier League, as he missed large parts of the campaign.

The 23-year-old struggled to establish himself in Villa’s starting XI in the Sky Bet Championship, with Steve Bruce opting to sign Neil Taylor during the January transfer window, which saw Amavi used as a makeshift winger for large parts of the second-half of the campaign.

Amavi made 48 appearances during his time at Villa Park, with the last of those coming on the final day of the 2016/17 season.

The Verdict

Aston Villa will be pleased with this particular piece of business, with Steve Bruce keen to free up some space in his squad for new arrivals.

Amavi has been unlucky during his time at Villa Park, with both injuries and Villa’s slump in form meaning he could not fulfil his potential.

A move back to France for the young defender should help him rediscover his best and allow him to play regular football – something that was not guaranteed at Aston Villa, as they go in search of promotion.
