The 26-year-old was offered fresh terms by incoming Spireites boss Dean Saunders but has turned them down in favour of a two-year contract at Highbury.

Ryan is widely regarded as one of the best midfielders in the third tier and interest was said to be high from clubs in both League One and the Championship.

The ex-Liverpool man played 52 times in all competitions for the Derbyshire club last season, as they reached the League One play-offs, and will add experience to a youthful looking Cod Army squad.

Fleetwood chairman Andy Pilley was on hand to speak with the club’s official website shortly after the deal had been agreed.

He said: “We are absolutely thrilled that Jimmy Ryan is joining the football club. I sincerely believe that he is one of the best midfielders in League One.

“It is a statement of intent. A lot of people have wrongly assumed that we lack ambition.

“We are hungry and we want to see this football club in the Championship.”
