Sky Bet League One outfit Fleetwood Town have boosted their chances of survival by securing experienced striker Shola Ameobi on a deal until the end of the season, the club has confirmed via their official website.
The ex-Nigeria international has been a free agent since Bolton Wanderers terminated a short-term deal due to financial troubles at the Macron Stadium.
With the Cod Army embroiled in a relegation battle at present, the ex-Newcastle United striker will provide a welcome boost of experience at such a critical time in their season.
Ameobi played close to 300 times in the Premier League for the Magpies and also played Champions League football with the club during the early stages of his career.
Fleetwood boss Steven Pressley was naturally delighted to pull off such a coup for the club.
He said: “We certainly couldn’t get any more experience than Shola Ameobi and we are delighted with the signing.
“It it vital that he has been playing as sometimes with attached players it can take them some time to get up to fitness. That won’t be the case with Shola.”
