Sporting Kansas City of Major League Soccer have this evening announced the signing of Derby County winger Johnny Russell, with the Scotsman signing a three-year deal, according to the club's official website.

Russell built up quite a rapport with the Derby supporters during his time at the East Midlands-based club and his consistent form saw him score 34 goals in just over 200 competitive games for the Rams.

Glasgow-born Russell signed for Derby in 2013 but of late he has fallen way down the pecking order and he has now opted to make the bold move across the pond to play his football in the ever-growing MLS.

The deal that sees Russell leave Pride Park will naturally begin speculation that Derby could have offloaded the winger in order to make space for a new recruit of their own, although with the clock ticking, boss Gary Rowett will need to act quickly if he is to bolster his ranks.

The Verdict

This transfer is a sign of the times as far as I am concerned and who can knock Johnny Russell for wanting to leave, not only to play football, but also to probably earn bucket-loads of money in the process.

Russell is only 27-years-old and he will represent a quality signing for Sporting Kansas City, who have pulled off a real coup with this deal.

Derby County supporters, what do you make to this deal? Sad to see Russell leave? Let us know in the comments below!!!
