Done Deal: Coventry City complete first summer signing as Championship midfielder arrives

Coventry City have signed Zain Westbrooke, the club’s official website has confirmed.

Westbrooke joins Coventry on a free transfer from Brentford, following a successful trial period with the club’s under-23 side.

The 21-year-old puts pen-to-paper on a two-year deal with an option of a third year open to the club.

But Westbrooke will not be available for any games in the 2017/18 season, meaning he will miss Coventry’s play-off semi-finals against Notts County and a Wembley final against Exeter City or Lincoln City should they progress.

Westbrooke leaves Brentford with just one senior appearance to his name at Griffin Park, that coming in a West London derby against Fulham.

The central midfielder also won the club’s B Team Players’ Player of the Year in the 2016/17 season.

Westbrooke has spent most of this season on loan in the National League, firstly with Solihull Moors and then with Leyton Orient.

At Solihull, the young midfielder made two appearances during his month-long youth loan, picking up an assist and a red card in his second game.

Between October and January, he played for Leyton Orient, making eight appearances in total before injury cut his loan stint short.

Westbrooke will now be looking to kick on after impressing Coventry enough on trial to earn a contract.

The Verdict

Like all other Coventry fans, I am hoping that Westbrooke has not been brought in as a Tom Bayliss replacement.

Since emerging in the first-team picture, Bayliss has shown that he is the next top talent coming through the academy and he is stirring up as much excitement as an early James Maddison was at the Ricoh Arena.

As for Westbrooke, judging by his performances for Orient, he needs to bulk up a bit and improve his physicality to cope at this level but some gritty performances in the centre of the park on trial at Coventry are early indicators that he has worked on that aspect of his game.
