Colchester United have signed former England Under-21 international Matthew Briggs following his release from Millwall, according to BBC Sport.
The 24-year-old ended last season on loan at the U’s, making 18 appearances, as the Essex side successfully avoided relegation to League Two with a final day victory over eventual play-off winners Preston North End.
Briggs, who started his career at Fulham, was capped at every England youth level and was part of the U19 squad that finished runners-up in the 2009 European Under-19 Football Championships.
He has since switched his allegiance to Guyana and has made one appearance for the Caribbean nation.
After loan spells at Leyton Orient, Peterborough, Bristol City and Watford, he joined Millwall on a free transfer last summer.
Briggs was let go by the Lions after just 12 appearances and has now signed a two-year deal with Colchester.
He becomes the U’s third summer signing following the arrivals of Richard Brindley and Kieran Bailey.
