Newcastle United have confirmed the permanent signing of Christian Atsu from Chelsea for an undisclosed fee, following an impressive loan spell with the club in the Sky Bet Championship last season.

Atsu becomes Rafa Benitez’s first summer signing ahead of Newcastle’s return to the Premier League and signs a four-year deal at St James’ Park, subject to the Ghanaian applying for a work permit.

The 25-year old played a key role in helping Newcastle gain promotion to the Premier League last season, making 32 league appearances under Benitez whilst on-loan from Chelsea.

Atsu also chipped in with five goals across the Championship season, including one in the 4-1 victory over Preston North End in April, which led to the Magpies securing promotion to the Premier League.

Benitez is expected to be active during the summer, and has a reported £100m transfer kitty, to help him bolster his squad ahead of their Premier League return.
