Charlton Athletic have moved quickly to replace the departing Joe Gomez, by agreeing a deal to sign German defender Patrick Bauer, the club’s official website has confirmed.
Bauer is a man mountain of a centre-back and joins the Addicks for an undisclosed fee from Portuguese side Maritimo.
The highly-rated defender has put pen-to-paper on a four-year deal with the London-based club.
The 22-year-old was a product of the academy at German club VfB Stuttgart before moving to the Portuguese Primeira Liga, initially on loan in 2012, before making a permanent switch a year later.
The towering defender stands at 6ft 4in and was a rock at the heart of the Maritimo defence last season, helping the club to the Portuguese Cup Final, where they were defeated 2-1 by Benfica.
In total he made 57 appearances during his time in Portugal and becomes Charlton boss Guy Luzon’s first summer signing.
