Done Deal: Championship club beat Leeds United to the signing of Heckingbottom favourite

Reading have completed their first signing of the summer transfer window after announcing on their official website that Andy Yiadom would be joining the club.

Yiadom, who has been a target for Leeds United, joins Reading on a free transfer after he let his contract run down at Barnsley.

After Barnsley were relegated to League One, Yiadom had no desire to remain at Oakwell and was looking for a new club as a free agent.

Leeds were interested in the 26-year-old as manager Paul Heckingbottom worked with him at Barnsley but this was never made into a formal offer because of doubts over whether they needed to strengthen at right-back or whether they needed another right-footed left-back.

Luke Ayling returned from injury on the final day of the season and he is likely to compete with Lewie Coyle – who has just completed a successful loan spell at League One club Fleetwood Town – and Gaetano Berardi.

Leeds did not follow up their interest in Yiadom because of these concerns and Reading have swooped.

The Royals have snapped up the Ghana international on a four-year deal which will keep him at the Madejski Stadium until the summer of 2022.

Yiadom played 66 times for the Tykes in his two years with the Yorkshire club, having completed a move from Barnet in summer 2016.

He also attracted attention from the Premier League last summer but is now a Reading player ahead of the 2018/19 campaign.

The Verdict

Leeds did not need Yiadom as they already have three capable right-backs there and they will be hoping left-back Tom Pearce commits his future to the club to cover them on the other flank.

Although the speedy full-back can also play as a winger, Leeds are quite well covered there and will probably be seeking an out-and-out winger anyway, rather than a makeshift one.

But for Reading, however, this is a fantastic addition as he is a free transfer, he has Championship experience and he offers cover on both sides of defence, as well as more attacking threat than current option Chris Gunter.

Leeds fans – Are you disappointed you have missed out on Yiadom?

Reading fans – Are you pleased with this signing?

Barnsley fans – Are you disappointed to lose Yiadom?
