Done Deal: Cambridge United sign USA defender

Cambridge United have signed American defender Shane O’Neill, BBC Sport have confirmed.

The 22 year old was previously with Cyrpriot side Apollon Limassol having previously spent time with Colorado Rapids, where he made over 50 appearances.

Shaun Derry has acted to bring in the defender on a deal until the end of the season, and he will go straight in to the squad to face Dagenham and Redbridge this weekend.

Cambridge are currently three points behind the play-off positions, and will be delighted to have brought in an extra body as they look to find their way in to the promotion places before the end of the season.

He has represented the USA under 23 international team on 10 occasions. He was born in Ireland, but has represented the USA due to his American citizenship.

The 22-year-old will be hoping to put his time at Limassol behind him as he has struggled to make appearances for the Cyprus based club, and he will be hoping to use his time at Cambridge as a platform to build on his career and improve further.
