Done Deal: Bristol Rovers secure signing of attacking midfielder

Bristol Rovers have announced on their official website that they have completed the signing of Oxford United’s Liam Sercombe for an undisclosed fee.

Sercombe becomes Bristol’s first summer signing, and shows Darrell Clarke’s intent for next season, by securing a transfer for the in-demand midfielder.

The 27-year old made 43 appearances for Oxford during the 2016/17 campaign, scoring five goals and helping Michael Appleton’s side to an eighth-placed finish in Sky Bet League One.

Sercombe was influential for Oxford in their promotion from League Two the season before, making over 50 appearances and scoring 17 goals across all competitions.

Rovers, who were promoted alongside Oxford in 2016, finished the 2016/17 campaign tenth, three-points behind the U’s.

Despite Appleton indicating that Sercombe was surplus to requirements at Oxford, Clarke insisted that the midfielder was one of his summer targets, he said: “Liam was one of my top summer targets.

“I was interested in signing him a couple of years ago as he is a quality attacking midfielder and I am delighted that he has agreed to join us.”
