Done Deal: Bristol City smash club record to land 24-year-old Senegal forward

Championship outfit Bristol City have today confirmed on their official website the club record signing of Angers forward Famara Diedhiou on a four-year deal.

The 24-year-old moved to the French side last year after two years at Sochaux, and proved his goal-scoring credentials with nine goals in 36 appearances last term, eight of which coming in their run to 12th place in Ligue 1.

In fact, Diedhiou also netted during their stunning run to the final of the Coupe de France, netting the winner in their last 16 success over Bastia, yet he was unable to inspire them to what would have been a huge upset in the final against Paris Saint-Germain, a game Angers lost 1-0.

Nonetheless, the Senegal international clearly proved his worth to the team, as Lee Johnson’s Bristol City have smashed their record transfer fee to bring him to Ashton Gate this summer.

The Robins have spent £5.3 million on the 24-year-old’s services, comfortably beating the £3.25 million they spent on Jonathan Kodjia two years ago, and it’s a deal manager Johnson is thrilled to get over the line.

He told the official website: ‘I’m absolutely delighted. I think he’s going to be a huge player for us.’

The news will surely please Bristol City supporters who saw their side flirt with relegation last season, yet saw the goals of Tammy Abraham get them out of trouble on more than one occasion.

However, the Chelsea man is set for a loan move to a Premier League club next term, which meant that those goals simply had to be replaced, and Johnson will hope that he has done just that by bringing Diedhiou to the club.
