Championship side Bristol City have today confirmed on their official website the signing of West Brom forward Jonathan Leko on loan for the entirety of the 2017/18 season.

The 18-year-old came up through the youth ranks at the Hawthorns before earning his senior debut for the Baggies back in September 2015, when he came on as a second half substitute in their 3-0 League Cup defeat to Norwich City.

And the England Under-18 international has since gone on to make a further 15 first team appearances for Tony Pulis’ side, 14 of which have come in the Premier League, although he failed to earn an appearance for the club in their first three league games of the current campaign.

And he won’t be adding any more top-flight appearances to his tally this term, as Lee Johnson’s Bristol City have officially landed the 18-year-old on loan for the remainder of the 2017/18 season.

The Robins have made a solid if unspectacular start to their Championship campaign, with one win and just one defeat from their first five matches, albeit that 3-1 success over Barnsley did come on the opening day of the season.

And with midfielder Bobby Reid having netted four of their seven goals so far this season, it’s clear that further attacking reinforcements could be of huge benefit to Johnson, and bringing in a player with the talent and potential of Leko will surely aid them in their quest to fulfil their aims this term.

The Verdict: Jonathan Leko has been in and around the West Brom first team for a while now to underline exactly how highly manager Tony Pulis rates the forward, and 16 Premier League appearances for an 18-year-old further exemplifies this.

Yet the Baggies chief would have known that it’d be difficult to guarantee the England youth international the gametime needed to develop this season, so a move down to the Championship makes complete sense for both the player and the club.

And what a signing he could turn out to be for Lee Johnson’s Bristol City, as Leko certainly has the talent and indeed the potential to make a significant impact at Ashton Gate, and thus aid a side that have stuttered to one win from their first five matches.
