Brighton and Hove Albion have signed Cameroon defender Gaetan Bong on a free transfer, the club has confirmed via their official club website.
The full Cameroonian international has signed a two-year deal with the Championship club after his short term contract with relegated side Wigan Athletic came to an end back in May.
Despite being played predominantly played a left back, Bong can also play at centre back – so Hughton will have a choice as to where he will want to utilise the defender.
Speaking to the club’s website, the former Birmingham City boss said: “Gaetan is a player that we were aware of before he came to England, while he was at Olympiakos in Greece.
“When he joined Wigan in February it provided us with the ideal opportunity to monitor his progress in England.”
“That gave us a really good opportunity to watch him at close hand in the championship and we saw him a lot during that time and he was one of the outstanding players for them.”
The Cameroon defender represented his country at the 2010 South Africa World Cup and he also has international experience with the French under-21’s side.
During his time at Greek side Olympiakos, Bong made four Champions League appearances before moving to the Latics in February 2015.
