Blackburn Rovers have signed Charlton Athletic striker Tony Watt on loan until the end of the season with a view to a permanent move in the summer, the Lancashire club have confirmed on their official website.

The 22-year-old has scored five goals in 25 appearances for Charlton and Cardiff City this season after spending two months on loan at the Welsh club.

Watt has previously played for clubs including Celtic and Belgian side Standard Liege, and famously scored the winner in Celtic's 2-1 victory over Barcelona in the Champions League two seasons ago.

However, he returned to The Valley earlier this month and following rumours that Rovers would make a move to bring him to Ewood Park, Paul Lambert has now made the forward his fifth signing of the transfer window.

Watt told the club's website he was thrilled to have made the move to the former Premier League champions, saying: “I'm delighted to sign, it was a no brainer when I had the chance to join and hopefully I can stay here for as long as possible.

“Blackburn is a massive club and I just want to play at the highest level that I can. [Lambert] wants me to play free, to work hard and he wants to make me a better player, and that ticked a lot of boxes for me."

Lambert has also brought in defender Elliott Ward and midfielder Elliott Bennett from Premier League sides Bournemouth and Norwich City respectively, as well as further boosting his attack with the additions of Simeon Jackson from Barnsley and the loan arrival of Sunderland's Danny Graham.

Only two Championship sides have scored fewer goals than Blackburn so far this season, and Lambert will be hoping that his new trio of strikers can help to fire his side up the table in the remaining months of the season.
