Blackburn Rovers defender Derrick Williams has signed a new long-term contract extension, the club's official website has confirmed.

Williams puts pen to paper on a new three-year deal, extending his stay at Ewood Park until 2021.

The reliable defender has played 93 games over the last two years since moving to Blackburn from Bristol City and has established himself as a regular in the side.

Last year, he helped Tony Mowbray's men win promotion back to the Championship after finishing second in League One with Williams starting in 45 out of the 46 league games.

The German-born defender, who can play at full-back or centre-half, also earned his first Republic of Ireland senior call-up in May 2018, making his debut against France.

Williams will be hoping to kick on in the Championship and earn more international recognition.

The Aston Villa academy product follows Craig Conway, Darragh Lenihan and Danny Graham in committing his future to Blackburn with a new contract this summer.

The Verdict

Williams has been crucial for Blackburn both in the Championship and in League One.

He is clearly settled at the club and he is exactly the type of player Mowbray will be delighted to have.

Blackburn fans should be happy with this news as yet another player commits his future to Rovers.
