Championship side Birmingham City have today confirmed on their official website the signing of midfielder Jason Lowe on a one-year deal.

The 25-year-old left Blackburn Rovers at the expiration of his contract earlier this summer to bring the curtain down on a 14-year association with the club, in which time he came up through the youth ranks to appear 196 times for the first team, 33 of which came in the Premier League.

And although he captained the side for the majority of last season, he was unable to inspire them to Championship safety under Tony Mowbray, with Rovers going down on the last day despite winning 3-1 at Brentford, which of course turned out to be Lowe’s last game for the club.

And now he will embark on his next adventure at Birmingham, as the club have officially confirmed his arrival on a one-year deal.

The Blues have made a sluggish start to the new season under Harry Redknapp, who has conveyed his frustration at the club’s failure to land key targets over the summer, with moves for the likes of Afriyie Acquah and Ogenyi Onazi falling through, while a deal to bring Stewart Downing to St Andrew’s has been rumbling on for some time, and still hasn’t been completed.

But midfielder Lowe has become Redknapp’s 11th signing of the summer, and will bring a vast amount of Championship experience and midfield guile to a side that will be hoping to improve their fortunes after the international break.

The Verdict: Birmingham City manager Harry Redknapp loves a deadline day, and the 70-year-old has once again got in on the act by landing former Blackburn Rovers midfielder Jason Lowe on a one-year deal.

The Blues boss would have been hoping for a slightly larger overhaul of the playing squad at St Andrew’s this summer than has actually taken place, but he is sure to try to keep adding to his side all the way up to today’s 11pm deadline.

And landing Lowe could turn out to be a very shrewd move indeed, as the 25-year-old possesses much Championship experience and midfield know-how that can rub off on the playing squad, both on the pitch as well as off it.
