Done Deal: Birmingham City sign up defender on two-year deal

Birmingham City defender Jonathan Grounds has signed a new deal with the club, according to the club’s official website.

The deal is a two-year deal with the option for a year extension and this will be good news for manager Gary Rowett as Grounds was a regular in his side throughout the 2014/15 campaign, and he becomes the fourth player this summer to pen a new deal at the club.

Grounds, 27, began his career with Middlesbrough as a youth before signing his first professional contract in 2007 with the club.

During what would be a five-year spell at the Riverside he managed to appear 33 times for Boro, spending the bulk of his time on Tyneside out on loan.

The 27-year-old had loan spells at Norwich, Hibernian, Chesterfield and Yeovil but he was unable to nail down a regular spot in the first team at any of these clubs.

He then left for Oldham in 2012 where he spent two years and made a significant impact at the club appearing 89 times during his time at Boundary Park and as a result of his impressive displays he was signed on a free transfer last summer by Birmingham.

This is definitely another piece of good news for Birmingham as they look to grow on a solid season for the club last campaign under manager Gary Rowett, and with this being the fourth new deal a player has signed at the club, along with the new arrivals that have come so far this summer, it is all positive news for a club that has little to cheer about since the Capital One Cup success back in 2011.

Birmingham City fans, Are you happy with this news? Are you pleased that another player has committed their future? Do you think the club is beginning to move in the right direction again? Can you make a challenge for the playoffs this season, or is it about continuing to stabilize the club? Let us know your thoughts and comments below!
