Aston Villa have completed the signing of Barnsley’s James Bree this morning, reports the club’s official Twitter account.
Right-back Bree joins Villa on a four-and-a-half year contract and becomes the club’s third January signing, following Henri Lansbury’s arrival from Nottingham Forest and the signing of goalkeeper Sam Johnstone.
The 19-year old has made 22 appearances across all competitions for Barnsley this season, and has impressed for Paul Heckingbottom’s side.
His performances have helped the Tykes surprise many, as they currently sit eighth in the Sky Bet Championship table- five places above Villa.
Villa boss Steve Bruce has been scouting Bree since the start of the January transfer window, and watched the teenager in Barnsley’s FA Cup tie with Blackpool.
Bree is the second high-profile player to leave Barnsley this month, following Sam Winnall’s sale to Sheffield Wednesday.
Villa are also interested in Tykes’ captain Conor Hourihane, whose contract is running down.
Bree could make his debut in next Tuesday’s clash with Brentford.
