Doncaster Rovers suffered a League One relegation last time out and are now preparing for life in the fourth tier of English football.

It will likely mean a summer of upheaval for the new League Two side, with the club probably having players poached from them from higher up the pyramid and the side needing to add fresh faces to their ranks to boot.

Now, it's been revealed by Paul Goodwin (via Doncaster Free Press) that the club are likely to sign up to five players this summer and could even add some loans alongside it.

Rovers have struggled defensively, conceding 82 times over the course of the third tier season. It was one of the worst records in the division, so you would expect the side to perhaps recruit more at the back.

Considering that their top goalscorer over the course of the campaign was also Tommy Rowe, who managed only nine throughout the season, it means they could also perhaps do with some additions offensively too.

It certainly could be busy for the club then - and it would seem as though the club understand the task at hand, with Goodwin claiming that there could be 'four or five permanent signings' taking place at Doncaster during the offseason.

He also suggested that the loan signings that do happen could be in attack - so Rovers could likely strengthen throughout their team over the course of the summer transfer window. Rovers then could be ready for a push back towards League One.

The Verdict

Doncaster will not want another season like their last, when they had to struggle throughout the campaign and ultimately settle for their fate as relegation-fodder in League One.

Now, there is a chance for a refresh in League Two. The club certainly feel as though the side could do with a reshuffle and with plenty of permanent signings looking on the cards and some short-term deals to boot, it means that Gary McSheffrey should have the chance to put his own stamp on the team.

That could work in two ways - with the manager able to play his own way now with his own players, he could end up taking them in the right direction. Alternatively, he could make things worse and lead them even further down the pyramid.

Either way, he will be trusted to bring in his own kind of players this summer - and Doncaster are ready to be freshened up it seems.
