When Andy Williams put pen-to-paper for Doncaster in pre-season, the now departed Paul Dickov claimed that the signing was a statement of intent from the club, and you wouldn’t be wrong in agreeing, following the marksman’s 22 goal campaign with Swindon last season.
But this time around things have been a little different for Williams – cutting a figure of frustration, he has converted just two league goals this campaign, one of which a penalty.
But following a goal in Doncaster’s impressive 2-0 win against Colchester this weekend the Rovers number 9 is feeling a wave of positivity about the place.
He told the Yorkshire Post; “I always have a goals target, but I never share it and I am the sort of striker who needs three to five chances to get a goal, but I wasn’t even getting one in some games.
“Things have certainly changed now. We showed what we are capable of and why we should be higher up the league than where we are.”
The striker’s enthusiasm on the pitch is clear to see and despite the lack of goals, his work rate is second to none, the impression around the club was that it would only be a matter of time before Williams started to net on a regular basis.
The appointment of attacking minded boss Darren Ferguson should certainly aid the chance creation of Rovers, and in turn the goal scoring tally of Williams, who has now claimed to have “amended” his goals target.
