Doncaster Rovers have bolstered their attacking options by completing the signing of free agent striker Kwame Thomas.

The 24-year-old has signed a short-term deal with Doncaster that will keep him at the Yorkshire club until January 2020.

Thomas has earned his contract after impressing manager Darren Moore while on trial at the club.

The forward developed through the Derby County academy but made just five senior appearances for the Rams before leaving to join Coventry City in 2016.

He was given more opportunities with the Sky Blues, making 14 appearances and scoring three times in his first season at the club, but failed to cement a first-team place.

The former England youth international, who represented the national side up to under-20 level, was then sent on loan to National League side Solihull Moors before joining them permanently.

He saw his contract with Solihull expire this summer and has been a free agent up until Rovers swooped for him.

The six-foot-three striker told the club website he was “very happy” to have joined the League One club.

He explained: “For a while now I’ve wanted to get things sorted and know where I would be playing my football this season.

“Everyone knows each other and all the lads have made me feel really welcome, that made it easy to settle in and for me to show what I can do.

“The boys have done really well and started the season off in good form, and from being involved in training with them I can see why.”

Doncaster are ninth in League One and are just three points away from the play-off places, with two games in hand on many teams in their division.

The Verdict

After coming through the youth system at Derby and England Thomas' career has stalled but it appears he may have some untapped potential.

It seems like it just hasn’t worked out for him in the past and he has drifted down the leagues.

This is a huge opportunity for the 24-year-old who has until January to prove that he deserves to be at the League One club.

This looks like a low-risk high-reward move from Rovers and it will be interesting to see how quickly he is thrown into the fray by Moore.
