Having only returned to League One with a comfortable fifteenth place finish following promotion from League Two last season, not many would have tipped Doncaster Rovers to head into the final run of League One fixtures as one of the sides in contention for a shot at the Playoffs.

But despite those pre-season mid-table expectations, Donny currently sit in that final League One playoff place, a point clear and with a game in hand on faltering Peterborough United in seventh. That Peterborough are going through a difficult run at the moment will be a welcome relief to those of a Doncaster persuasion, given that Donny themselves haven't won in their last five games, with defeats at relegation battlers Shrewsbury and AFC Wimbledon both coming within that run.

Despite those problems, Doncaster still have plenty to draw on in the race for a place in the playoffs and potentially the Championship.

Unlike many of the other sides currently in the fight for promotion, Doncaster will not have the weight of expectation to deal with.

While unlike in the Championship where the majority of the sides in mid-table positions are still chasing the playoffs, League One finds the majority of the sides in those positions battling relegation, meaning the pressure of the chasing on Donny is lessened.

Perhaps the biggest motivating factor for Doncaster however, will be the scenes that they had to see on their own Keepmoat Stadium pitch at the end of last season.  First, the back end of last April a 1-0 win for Blackburn at the Keepmoat saw Tony Mowbray's side seal their promotion back to the Championship, before Wigan's win by the same scoreline on the final day saw them awarded the League One title at Doncaster's home ground. Having watched those celebrations just under twelve months ago, the Keepmoat faithful would surely love a party of their own when the promotion places are handed out again in just a few weeks from now.

With several of the current squad having enjoyed promotion to League One with Doncaster just under two seasons ago, and Paul Downing, part of Blackburn's squad that won promotion at the Keepmoat last season now on loan with Donny, there is plenty of know how and desire to enjoy another promotion, even if this one would likely have to come via the playoffs, then again, they do say that can be the more enjoyable way to go.
