Dr Tony Xia addressed the club's financial issues without providing a clear answer.

Aston Villa failed in their bid to achieve promotion in their second season in the Championship with Fulham proving to be too good for them in the Play-Off Final. It's no secret that they have spent heavily in the past two seasons trying to achieve their aims, and they now have roughly £40m to make up in order to comply with Financial Fair Play regulations, according to the Birmingham Mail.

They can address that issue by selling some of their star players such as Jack Grealish, but they also have to reduce the wage bill to avoid long-term issues, so signing loanees permanently from last season is highly unlikely.

Dr Xia's statement seemed to suggest that they would take a more long-term approach in the future with big changes needed to enforce this, but neglected to provide specific details:

"Under the current circumstances, I think the club needs to rethink not only the past two years but also the past ten years. Villa needs to be a sustainable football club."

"No one wanted to see the club have to go through this, but I believe that only changes can help the club to progress towards the positive direction."

Here's the tweet from the official account:

Villa fans were quick to point out the vagueness of the statement as well as Villa's potential future:
