According to Italian journalist Tancredi Palmeri, Leeds United had tabled a €15million bid for the SPAL striker Andrea Petagna.

However, the Whites will be acutely aware of the need to stay in-line with FFP rules and with Wolves striker Helder Costa already secured on a loan-to-buy deal, Leeds Live rule the Whites out of a move for the 24-year-old.

So are Leeds right to pass on Petagna?

We discuss.........

Alfie Burns

“This was never a move I could see happening, despite Petagna having a good track record.

“Leeds are laying out some serious money on Helder Costa next summer, which means they are tightening their belts now to make sure they meet FFP regulations if they don’t go up.

“Gambling on a multi-million pound striker right now would make the coming season ‘make or break’, which doesn’t seem to be Andrea Radrizzani’s style.

“It’s good that this was put to bed early before expectations rocketed.”

Chris Gallagher

"It's a shame for the Leeds fans but it's no real surprise.

"Andrea Radrizzani hasn't really splashed the cash since he took over at Elland Road, so to spend what would be a significant fee on a striker, when Leeds already have Kemar Roofe and Patrick Bamford, seemed unlikely.

"However, if they could find the money for the SPAL man then it would be a real coup. He has so much quality and would be a star in the Championship, with his physicality and power meaning he would be able to flourish in England.

"But, there are more pressing priorities for the Whites right now and if that sort of money is available the support would surely prefer a top centre-back is brought in, although it seems as though Bielsa could go into the new season with what he has right now."

Toby Wilding

"To be fair, I can understand Leeds' stance here.

"Prior to his impressive form last season, there is nothing in Petagna's record to suggest that he is a particularly prolific goalscorer, so spending that sort of money of him feels like it could be something of a risk for Leeds.

"That being said, spending that much money on a player would be a real statement of intent for the club, and you imagine it would go some way to boosting the mood among the club's fanbase ahead of the new season, something which seems to have taken a hit following the recent speculation around a number of the club's current players, and a recent lack of incomings following a promising start to the summer.

"Given the troubles Leeds had in attack last season, particularly when missing Kemar Roofe through injury, I do still think that they could do to bring a striker to Elland Road before the window closes, so continuing to look for one seems to be the best course of action, even if Petagna himself may not be the most suitable option."
