It was a hugely disappointing Tuesday night for Derby County, who fell to a 3-2 defeat at the hands of Luton Town at Kenilworth Road.

The Rams went into this clash embarking on an unbeaten run of seven matches in all competitions, therefore confidence was bound to be high in the Derby camp.

After a scrappy first-half, Derby finally made their advantage count just after the hour mark, when Wayne Rooney scored his first goal for the club as a deflected effort found its way past Simon Sluga.

But the Hatters responded incredibly well after going behind, with two goals in quick succession putting them into an unlikely lead - Pelly Ruddock Mpanzu and Donervon Daniels finding the net.

Derby did push for an equaliser late on, and they managed to find it through substitute Chris Martin on 85 minutes, as Phillip Cocu's looked to have salvaged a late point.

But that wasn't to be the case as Luton came fighting back again - Jayden Bogle scoring an own goal less than a minute later, and Max Lowe then receiving a red card in stoppage time.

Luton ran out 3-2 winners in the end, however the result could have been completely different had Derby taken the chances that came their way.

Before Rooney's goal, Tom Lawrence squandered a massive chance for the Rams, hitting the frame of the goal from 12 yards with the goal gaping.

It summed up what had been a frustrating night for Lawrence, who left a lot to be desired in his performance after failing to get into the game at all.
