This article is part of Football League World’s ‘The Verdict‘ series, which provides personal opinions from the FLW writers regarding the latest breaking news, teams, players, managers, potential signings and more…
As per the Peterborough Telegraph, Posh have rejected a trio of ‘million-pound plus’ bids for their star man.
The 26-year-old scored six goal for Posh last season in 36 Championship outings after starring for them in League One the season prior.
In that campaign, the attacking-midfielder scored an impressive 15 goals whilst also laying on eight assists for his teammates, helping Posh earn promotion to the second-tier.
With the above in mind, here, our FLW writers offer their verdict on the links, and whether or not Szmodics would start for Rovers next season.
This does have the potential to be a useful signing for Blackburn if they can get it done.
With Reda Khadra’s loan over, and the Brighton man seemingly set for pastures new, it does feel as though Rovers could benefit from the addition of another forward option who can play off the main striker, such as Szmodics.
Given the fact that the 26-year-old was able to produce a reasonably solid goals return for a player in his position, in a Peterborough team that struggled in the Championship last season, he could be a useful option for a Blackburn team who will be aiming higher up the second-tier table.
However, with the likes of Tyrhys Dolan, Dilan Markanday and Ryan Hedges also capable of filling a similar role to Szmodics, there may be no guarantee he is a regular starter at Ewood Park, meaning the club may need to be careful not to pay over the odds – when they need funds for other important business – having supposedly already had bids rejected here.
Quiz: Can you identify the 10 fake Blackburn Rovers facts?
This could be a smart bit of business for Blackburn Rovers but Peterborough United are a tough team to do a deal with.
With Joe Rothwell departing and question marks over Bradley Dack’s fitness, Rovers could do with adding some more creative spark in the centre of the park.
Sammie Szmodics is a livewire and can offer attacking impetus – either driving the team forward with the ball at his feet or picking up dangerous positions both outside and inside the box.
He was more a goalscorer than a creator for Peterborough last season but we’ve seen the creative side of him at League One and League Two level.
With two years left on his contract and three bids rejected already, it’s not going to be easy to prize him away from the Posh but it could work out well for Blackburn.
Peterborough United seem fairly resolute on keeping Szmodics and who can blame them?
If he remains at London Road, he could once again be a really key player for Posh in the third tier next campaign.
You do feel Blackburn are going to have to make a really significant offer here to turn the club’s head.
Whether or not they are willing to do that remains to be seen. Given how little football Bradley Dack has played in recent seasons, it could be a wise investment for them to do so.
