Fans of sides based in the northern county of Yorkshire will tell you there aren’t many derbies in world football better than those between clubs in England’s largest traditional county.
The likes of Sheffield Wednesday, Leeds, Sheffield United, Huddersfield and Barnsley have forged fierce, intense rivalries over the years, and matches between the sides have evolved into pulsating spectacles.
Take your mind back to one such derby, as Leeds United hosted Sheffield Wednesday in August 2015.
The season was fresh, with each side looking for an early victory over their local rivals to spark a run of form, and force renewed hope and optimism around their respective stadiums.
The match ended in a riveting 1-1 draw, but one moment from the game will forever be etched into the memories of those present at Elland Road.
Chasing down a long ball forward from the back, Owls forward Marco Matias beat the offside trap to get in behind the Leeds back-line.
Facing away from goal, the Portuguese international flicks the ball over a defender with his right foot, before smashing an unstoppable strike into the far corner off the underside of the bar with his left.
The commentator describes the goal as ‘magic’, and there is no word more suitable in the English language to paint a picture of the goal.
Both side’s seasons ultimately ended in failure, with Leeds enduring a mid-table finish, and Wednesday suffering the heartbreak of defeat in the playoff final at Wembley.
Matias is still on the books at Hillsborough, but has made just two appearances from the bench in the Carabao Cup for Carlos Carvalhal’s side this season.
Wednesday fans, is that the best goal you’ve ever seen from an Owls player?
