Aston Villa are weighing up a move for Aberdeen goalkeeper Joe Lewis, according to the Scottish Sun.

Steve Bruce ordered scouts to go and watch the former Cardiff City shot-stopper in action, ahead of a potential move.

Sam Johnstone's long-term future is still uncertain with him only on loan at Villa Park, so could Lewis be the man Bruce sees between the sticks in the future at the club?

The writers here at FLW have their say on this transfer link....

Joe Lewis has proven himself to be arguably the best keeper in Scotland over recent seasons.

Villa's need for a keeper doesn't seem apparent now with Sam Johnstone doing well, but his loan is up at the end of the season. The Aberdeen keeper has kicked on in recent seasons and is now a real steady and calming influence at the back.

However, a lot will depend on where Villa are next season. In the Premier League, they should be after better. In the Championship, Lewis would be fine.

Joe Lewis is an excellent goalkeeper, but it is a surprise to see Aston Villa linked with a move for him.

Recent reports have told us that Bruce is keen to make Sam Johnstone’s loan move permanent, which makes the interest in Aberdeen’s 30-year-old goalkeeper a slight surprise.

Could this update mean that Villa’s move for the impressive Johnstone is in jeopardy? Worrying.

Do Villa need him?

Joe Lewis is a good 'keeper, make no mistake, but the Villans have a very good stopper in Sam Johnstone.

Villa, then, should be making all the effort they can to make the loan deal he is on permanent rather than signing Lewis and I'd say this is more a contingency plan than anything else.

Perhaps Villa aren't confident they'll get Johnstone in?
