Sunderland manager Jack Ross still has the small matter of a League One play-off final against Charlton Athletic to prepare for, but that has not stopped the Black Cats boss planning for the future, with Ayr United striker Lawrence Shankland still on Ross' wishlist, according to Chronicle Live.

Shankland, 23, has had an excellent season at Ayr, scoring 24 goals in 31 league appearances and this form has brought interest from Swansea City and Nottingham Forest plus Glasgow giants Celtic and Rangers.

So would Shankland be a good fit at the Stadium of Light?

We discuss.........

Toby Wilding

"For a side pushing for automatic promotion this season, Sunderland have been badly lacking a goalscorer, as proven by the fact that the long since departed Josh Maja still has four more league goals than anyone else for the Black Cats this season.

"That is a problem that will only intensify if Sunderland are to win promotion for next season, so bringing in a reliable goalscorer such as Shankland would go someway to avoiding an immediate return to the third tier."

Gary Hutchinson

“He’s got a lot of goals for Ayr, but the quality of opposition isn’t the highest.

“I can see him being a player who gets loaned out in January if he goes.

“I’d hope his quality shines through, but there’s many players that come down from that level to England and struggle.”

Jacob Potter

"Do they need him?

"Sunderland already have a number of attacking options that are proven at a higher level than League One.

"I don’t think they need him if they win promotion into the Championship, but he could be a useful player to have in the squad if they are in the third tier for another season."
